Why Edo Elders Should Grant Gelegele Ijaws Their Own LGA

Gelegele in Ovia North-East of Edo State is rich in oil and gas. Ijaw communities have lived here for centuries, long before our current state boundaries were drawn. Our leaders should unite us, not prepare youths for conflict. Yet the Oba of Benin and other Edo elders seem to ignore Ijaw concerns in this region. Ijaws in Gelegele rightly demand their own local government area. Claiming they want to steal Edo land is shameful. The real threat to our farmland comes from those who block farmers’ access to their fields. I believe justice demands that Gelegele Ijaws have their own LGA. I am not an Ijaw, but I stand for fairness whether others like it or not.

What benefits could granting Gelegele Ijaws their own LGA bring to both Ijaw communities and Edo State as a whole?

It's interesting how state boundaries ignored centuries of Ijaw settlement, yet oil wealth remains under Edo leadership control.

I'm not convinced creating another LGA automatically ensures fairness; political will and resource distribution still depend on transparent governance.

Local and Edo state leaders should organize joint committees with Ijaw representatives to outline revenue sharing and conflict prevention guidelines for Gelegele.
