Nigeria Has 8,809 PHCs Today, FG Aims for 17,618 by 2027

Nigeria Has 8,809 PHCs Today, FG Aims for 17,618 by 2027

I note that Nigeria has 8,809 primary healthcare centres as of today. The National Primary Health Care Development Agency plans to double this network to 17,618 by 2027 for universal health coverage. I reported that the FG has just disbursed ₦26,893,942,584.80 from the fourth quarter BHCPF to all 36 states and the FCT. I also shared how residents of Gamsha community in Bauchi are already benefiting from their local PHC. I am surprised the NPHCDA CEO has not corrected misleading claims about Peter Obi’s ward-level pledges. The Health Ministry should issue a comprehensive status update on all PHCs nationwide. I advise public figures to base their policy statements on existing data. Review current plans before proposing new targets.

We already have 8,809 centres today, but disbursing nearly ₦27 billion doesn't guarantee evenly spread services across rural areas.

Absolutely, expanding centre count is impressive, but ensuring quality services reach remote communities is the real challenge.

Before celebrating any targets, we should question whether the existing centres are even functional, let alone focus on new ones.

The agency could start by auditing current PHCs for staffing and equipment gaps to target investments where they matter most.
