Police Tear-Gas Mexican Teachers Protesting Near World Cup Fan Fest
Mexico City officers used tear gas to stop a teachers’ march just days before the 2026 World Cup Fan Fest opens on the Zócalo plaza. The protest was organised by a dissident faction of the teachers’ union (CNTE), which demands higher pay and pension law reversals. Clashes began when educators broke through metal barricades protecting the giant screen for the first match on June 11. At least two people were injured and protesters responded by throwing firecrackers and damaging police property. The government has offered a 9% salary increase, but teachers insist on much larger raises and have threatened mass action during the tournament if talks stall.
