Documenting the Oral History of Ezza’s 13 Kings and Crown AF1978.12.1

Ezza people do not have to wait for outsiders to tell our story. Our oral traditions, documented dates and the 12 Bundles provide a foundation for preserving the history of the 13 Kings of Ezza. According to traditions passed down by Ezza elders, the 13 Kings ruled the land by covenant. Each king was linked to the 12 Bundles, while crown AF1978.12.1 is remembered as a symbol of that covenant. The crown was catalogued by the British Museum in 1978, but the identities of the Ezza kings connected to it were not recorded. If you know a name, story or date, share it so we can document Ezza history in our own voice and support calls for the return of the crown.

Oral tradition is valuable, but documenting different versions carefully may matter as much as presenting one settled account.

A clear archive separating elder accounts, dates, and the 12 Bundles could help younger Ezza people engage with this history.
