FG Pledges Stronger Security and Fight Against Disinformation Ahead of 2027 Elections
The Federal Government says it will strengthen security and the information environment ahead of the 2027 general elections. Information Minister Mohammed Idris said peaceful and credible polls depend on security, trusted institutions, responsible political actors and access to accurate information. He said the government would deploy resources, personnel and technology against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other threats. Idris also warned that artificial intelligence is making it easier to create convincing fake audio, videos and images that can mislead voters. According to the minister, efforts to protect elections must go beyond polling units and ballot materials. They must also include cybersecurity, media literacy, intelligence-led planning, coordination among agencies and public confidence in democratic institutions. The government said it is working with UNESCO and other stakeholders through the International Media and Information Literacy Institute in Abuja to improve citizens’ ability to identify and resist misinformation.
