Wike Orders Demolition of Abuja Houses Blocking Waterways, Says Senators Won’t Be Spared

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has ordered the demolition of buildings erected on waterways and drainage corridors in Maitama and other flood-prone parts of Abuja. During an inspection of areas affected by recent flooding, Wike said enforcement would begin immediately and that influential owners, including senators, would not be exempt. He said the affected structures violate the Abuja Master Plan by obstructing natural stormwater channels. Several homes in Maitama Extension were reportedly flooded over the weekend. Wike also directed FCT agencies to desilt drainage systems and warned residents and traders against dumping refuse in waterways, which worsens flooding during heavy rainfall.
