Senior Lawyer Warns FG Against Power Grab, Urges Respect for Rule of Law

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and lead counsel to the Accord Party cautioned the Federal Government against excessive desperation for political power. He warned that such behavior could weaken democratic institutions. Speaking on a current affairs programme in Ogun State, he reacted to the recent court order deregistering several political parties. He noted that the Court of Appeal has since stayed that judgment ahead of a full hearing on June 25. He defended the judiciary’s overall integrity, saying isolated errors should not discredit the entire system. He also dismissed claims that the electoral commission was unduly favoring his party, insisting INEC acted within its constitutional mandate. Finally, he expressed concern over the growing backlog of political cases, arguing they divert judicial time from criminal and civil matters. He urged government officials to allow legal processes to run their course and highlighted existing mechanisms for monitoring judges.
