African Youth Alliance Refutes N5M SIU Extortion Allegations, Demands Proof
The African Youth Development Alliance (AYDA) has challenged a recent report accusing the Nigeria Police Force’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of extorting N5 million from an Abuja businessman. In a statement, spokesperson Busola Tejumola described the publication as misleading and unsupported by credible evidence. AYDA’s independent inquiry found no record of any demand or receipt by SIU officer Abiodun Adekunle Fasasi. The group also noted that the alleged receipts do not bear Fasasi’s name or link to any intermediaries, a gap that undermines the report’s credibility. The Alliance dismissed claims that Fasasi threatened detainees with charges like cybercrime, drug offences, tax evasion, and money laundering. It said these allegations contradict standard police procedures and appear fabricated to discredit an ongoing investigation. AYDA urged the accused businessman to provide verifiable proof of any bail negotiation. It also called on media organisations to verify facts before publishing and to avoid sensational reports that could erode public trust.
