Kano, Nine Others Secure Top Spots in 2025 GATI Governance Rankings

Kano, Nine Others Secure Top Spots in 2025 GATI Governance Rankings

Kano State earned a place in Category A of the 2025 Governance Accountability and Transparency Index (GATI) alongside nine other states. The Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers (GOMEP) Nigeria recognised them for outstanding transparency, accountability, and institutional effectiveness. Kano’s score soared from 58.6 in 2024 to 89.1 in 2025, marking a 52% improvement. This leap reflects Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s reform-driven leadership and commitment to better governance. Key reforms include enhanced fiscal transparency, stronger accountability mechanisms, wider citizen participation, and the adoption of digital tools for service delivery. The state also recorded progress in infrastructure, procurement transparency, and media access. The independent GATI report draws on over 12,600 data entries and 350 governance indicators per state. It combines nationwide surveys, expert reviews, document analysis, and multi-layered verification to assess performance across all 36 states.

It's notable that only ten states reached Category A, but these rankings often focus on policy documents rather than on-the-ground service delivery improvements.

Citizens should track post-award metrics and demand regular public reports to verify if transparency and accountability genuinely improve after the rankings.
