Fair Primaries: Nigeria’s Path to Credible Elections
As parties across Nigeria prepare for the 2027 primaries, fairness and transparency must guide candidate selection. Too often, imposition, vote buying and intimidation undermine internal democracy and fuel voter apathy. President Bola Tinubu’s call for a decency-first approach should translate into action. Party leaders must allow delegates to vote freely and security agencies must remain neutral. Losing aspirants should respect outcomes and refrain from sponsoring unrest. Opposition parties also need internal consistency. They must avoid shadowy consensus deals that alienate members. The Independent National Electoral Commission, civil society groups and the media should closely monitor primaries and expose abuses. Credible internal elections build grassroots support and strengthen democracy. Nigeria’s future depends on merit, not money, intimidation or godfatherism.
