When a 50 ngwee Coin and Holey Shoes Built a Lifelong Love
In 1982, my father, recently jobless and worn down, handed a 50 ngwee coin to a young nurse on a bus and vowed to find her. He learned her name and clinic through the sister in charge and walked two hours daily just to see her. At first, my mother was too embarrassed by his shabby clothes and holey shoes. She ignored him until a week without his visits made her realize how much she missed his kindness and persistence. They married soon after and transformed a small farm into rental homes and thriving agricultural ventures. My mother left nursing early to focus on farming. Together they supplied milk, maize, vegetables, and even strawberries to local markets and retailers. When my father died in 2014, my mother asked me to share their story. She remained grateful he never gave up. Their journey reminds us not to judge by appearances and to cherish love that arrives in unexpected packaging.
