How to Build a Personal Library You’ll Actually Read
Buying books is easy. Reading them is where many of us struggle. Between work, social media, streaming and daily responsibilities, an exciting new title can sit untouched for months. Build a library around what genuinely interests you, not what you think you are supposed to read. Choose romance, fashion, food, business, travel, design, memoirs or thrillers if those are the subjects that hold your attention. Reading should feel enjoyable, not like an assignment. This is also a great time to explore African writing. Beyond Chinua Achebe, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Wole Soyinka, writers such as Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀, Akwaeke Emezi, Abi Daré, Chigozie Obioma and Nnedi Okorafor offer memorable stories across many genres. Familiar settings, humour and experiences can make these books especially rewarding. Make reading part of time you already have: a few pages before bed, during lunch, while travelling or through audiobooks in traffic. A well-used library is not one filled with pristine books. It is one with books that are read, shared, revisited and loved.
