Unpacking Divorce and Remarriage in Scripture
The Bible views marriage as a lifelong bond. It permits divorce only on the ground of sexual immorality, and remarriage after an unscriptural divorce is considered adultery. Death alone ends the marriage covenant and allows a believer to marry again. If a couple separates for other reasons, Scripture advises remaining single or pursuing reconciliation. God’s original will is clear: “What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” Jesus and the Genesis account affirm that marriage is designed for life (Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:4-6). Moses permitted divorce because of hard hearts, but Jesus restored the original standard. He stated that divorcing and remarrying outside the allowance for fornication leads to adultery (Matthew 19:8-9; 5:31-32). The parallel accounts in Mark and Luke reinforce this teaching (Mark 10:11-12; Luke 16:18).
