Norway Coach Reveals Fitness Fears Behind Haaland Substitution vs England

Norway Coach Reveals Fitness Fears Behind Haaland Substitution vs England

Norway manager Stale Solbakken says he had no choice but to withdraw Erling Haaland during extra time in the 2-1 loss to England. He explained that Haaland was exhausted and suffering a dead leg by the second half. Solbakken added that the Manchester City striker had given his all, scoring seven goals in five World Cup games before being replaced by Jørgen Strand Larsen. With Haaland on the bench, England held on through Jude Bellingham’s equaliser and extra-time winner to reach the semi-finals. The coach admitted he might have made the switch ten minutes earlier but praised Haaland’s tournament performance and said fatigue was inevitable after such a gruelling run.

Do you think Solbakken's decision to substitute Haaland in extra time was fully justified by fitness concerns?

Was there any mention of Haaland showing fatigue earlier in the match before the extra time decision?

Apparently Haaland carried on with what sounds like a serious dead leg for almost the entire match, a gamble given the stakes.

I understand the health angle, but pulling your star striker in extra time probably cost Norway any chance at a comeback.

Next time Norway could consider rotating more players during the tournament to avoid overworking key forwards like Haaland in tight fixtures.
