Why Turning the Oyo Kidnapping into Politics Terrifies Me
I’m writing as a concerned Nigerian, moved by the recent abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State. Instead of focusing on prayers and calls for better security, many immediately blamed political parties or used the tragedy to score points. Kidnappers don’t ask which party you support. In times of fear, we should show empathy, not division. Parents are losing sleep, families are in pain, and yet the first reaction for many is “Which side will benefit?” Our leaders—at all levels—must protect lives, arrest and prosecute criminals, and restore public confidence. As citizens, we must value human lives above party loyalty, demand justice, and hold officials accountable without turning every tragedy into a partisan battle. Let’s stop exploiting suffering for cheap political gain. Let’s refuse to worship politicians while ignoring our fellow Nigerians in pain. Only a united, compassionate nation can overcome insecurity and heal together. What do you think? Are we losing our humanity in the heat of politics?
