Sultan of Sokoto and Vatican Envoy Urge Joint Fight Against Hate Speech and Fake News

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, and the Vatican’s Secretary for Relations with States, Paul Richard Gallagher, met at the National Mosque in Abuja to address the rising spread of hate speech and fake news in Nigeria. They warned that both threats fuel division and endanger peaceful coexistence. Represented by NSCIA deputy secretary general Salisu Shehu, the Sultan stressed that religious leaders must work together to counter narratives that insult faith figures or spread falsehoods. He also highlighted concerns over moral decline and a growing rejection of religion among young people. Archbishop Gallagher noted broad agreement between Muslim and Catholic leaders on issues affecting national development. He emphasized that cooperation between both faiths is essential for the common good of all Nigerians.
