Bricks vs. Bandwidth: Rethinking Church for Today’s World

Bricks vs. Bandwidth: Rethinking Church for Today’s World

For generations, going to church meant gathering in a building at a set time. The rise of online services, especially during COVID-19 lockdowns, created a powerful alternative. Debates over which is better miss the point. We should ask: better for whom and for what purpose? In-person worship offers tangible sacraments, spontaneous fellowship, and whole-body engagement. Online church brings accessibility, flexibility, and a broader evangelistic reach. Homebound seniors, shift workers, and curious seekers can join from anywhere. Still, neither model alone meets every need. Many church leaders now embrace a hybrid approach. Physical gatherings anchor sacraments and face-to-face community. Digital tools extend reach through livestreams, small-group video calls, and on-demand teaching. The goal is not competition but complementarity. What matters most is connecting people to Christ and to one another in their real circumstances.

True talk! Online church really helps busy parents and remote believers connect without missing a service.

It's interesting that convenience often overshadows the irreplaceable sense of togetherness you get in a physical church building.

I'm not convinced digital worship can fully replace the spontaneous fellowship and accountability found in a local congregation.

Maybe a hybrid schedule could balance in-person gatherings with regular livestreams to reach both traditional attendees and digital participants.
