Bricks vs. Bandwidth: Rethinking Church for Today’s World
For generations, going to church meant gathering in a building at a set time. The rise of online services, especially during COVID-19 lockdowns, created a powerful alternative. Debates over which is better miss the point. We should ask: better for whom and for what purpose? In-person worship offers tangible sacraments, spontaneous fellowship, and whole-body engagement. Online church brings accessibility, flexibility, and a broader evangelistic reach. Homebound seniors, shift workers, and curious seekers can join from anywhere. Still, neither model alone meets every need. Many church leaders now embrace a hybrid approach. Physical gatherings anchor sacraments and face-to-face community. Digital tools extend reach through livestreams, small-group video calls, and on-demand teaching. The goal is not competition but complementarity. What matters most is connecting people to Christ and to one another in their real circumstances.
