Alumni Revolt: Humphrey Nwafor Leads Rally Against Unity Schools’ PPP Asset Stripping

Alumni Revolt: Humphrey Nwafor Leads Rally Against Unity Schools’ PPP Asset Stripping

On Saturday, May 9, 2026, alumni of Nigeria’s Unity Schools will stage an awareness walk and rally in Lagos, Abuja and Kano. They are not opposing reform, but protesting how Public-Private Partnership deals are executed. Humphrey Nwafor, president of the Lagos chapter of the Federal Government College Kano Old Students Association, says current land-swap concessions amount to asset stripping. He agrees these schools need new funding models but argues that selling school land undermines their financial sustainability. As an alternative, Nwafor proposes a structured alumni-led management model. He points out that even 0.5% of banking sector profits could close the funding gap. His plan leverages alumni networks and CSR partnerships to bring transparency, competition and long-term investment to Unity Schools.

It's interesting that alumni support reform in principle but still find the execution of PPP deals harmful to school assets and heritage.

Alumni could form a committee to review PPP contracts line by line, then propose clear clauses protecting school property and resources.
