Federal High Court Upholds Pharmacy Council Crackdown on Illegal Drug Stores in Calabar
A Federal High Court in Calabar has dismissed a fundamental rights suit against the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria and the NSCDC. The suit challenged the March 2025 sealing of two drug stores in Cross River State over allegations of unlicensed operations. Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu ruled that the applicants failed to prove any breach of their constitutional rights. The court held that regulatory agencies acted within their powers after suspecting the shops were not properly registered under the Pharmacy Council Act. The judgment highlights the importance of enforcing pharmaceutical regulations to protect public health from the risks of unlicensed drug distribution. A related criminal case has been adjourned to June 1 for continuation of proceedings.
