Lawyer Ejiofor Exposes Coerced Pleas and Rights Breaches in Terrorism Trials of Igbo Youths
Nigerian human rights lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor has raised concerns over the prolonged detention and trial of young Igbo defendants on terrorism charges. He alleges that many spent over five years in custody without timely arraignment and were denied the legal counsel of their choice. According to the statement, court proceedings were shrouded in secrecy. Some defendants were pressured into guilty pleas they did not understand. Lawyers from private firms were blocked from representing the accused and faced threats of arrest. Ejiofor warns that these practices violate sections 35 and 36 of the Constitution, which guarantee personal liberty and the right to a fair hearing. He argues that due process must hold even in high-profile terrorism cases to protect every citizen’s rights.
