NNPC Completes OB3 Pipeline River Niger Crossing to Boost Gas Supply

NNPC Completes OB3 Pipeline River Niger Crossing to Boost Gas Supply

NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company has achieved a major milestone by completing the River Niger crossing for the 130km Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) gas pipeline. The project was executed two kilometres underground using advanced drilling technology. The successful crossing unlocks the pipeline’s full capacity of 2 billion standard cubic feet per day. This will strengthen power generation, boost industrial output and improve gas availability across Nigeria. NNPC’s Group Chief Executive highlighted that this feat builds on lessons from the AKK crossing in 2025 and credits supportive government policies for creating an enabling environment. Experts predict an additional 500 million scfd of gas supply will flow into the national and West African markets. As Nigeria aims to scale oil and gas production by 2030, projects like OB3 are seen as key to achieving sustainable energy security and economic growth.

Completing a two-kilometre underground crossing certainly sounds ambitious, yet similar projects here faced frequent technical setbacks.

I no dey convinced say this crossing go improve supply if distribution and regulations remain as they are.

Local monitoring teams should be trained to inspect the underground section regularly and prevent potential leaks or technical faults early.
