Japan Commits ₦20bn to Strengthen Nigeria’s Power Grid in Lagos
Japan, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency, has committed ₦20 billion to expand and rehabilitate Nigeria’s electricity transmission infrastructure. The Apapa Transmission Substation in Lagos is a major focus of the intervention. The upgrade includes two new 60MVA transformers and modern gas-insulated switchgear. Apapa’s capacity has risen to 180MVA, adding about 96MW of bulk power availability to the area. The Apapa and Ijora projects together add 208MW of transmission capacity. Japan is also supporting a concessional-loan project to strengthen the Lagos-Ogun transmission network, alongside technical assistance for power-sector reforms. The investment could improve supply to homes and businesses, but its impact will still depend on generation, gas availability, distribution upgrades and maintenance.
