Friday Ekpo Predicts Super Eagles Will Shine Against Portugal and Poland

Friday Ekpo Predicts Super Eagles Will Shine Against Portugal and Poland — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Former Super Eagles midfielder Friday Ekpo says Nigeria will rise to the challenge in high-profile friendlies against Poland and Portugal. The Super Eagles face Poland in Warsaw on June 3, then Portugal in Leiria on June 10 as part of preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Ekpo believes these elite fixtures will bring out the best in the squad. He praised the quality on both sides and said coach Eric Chelle will use these games to fine-tune tactics and assess player combinations. “We have lots of quality players on both teams, and you can expect nothing but a top performance,” Ekpo told Complete Sports. Before those matches, Nigeria will compete in the 2026 Unity Cup in London, facing Zimbabwe in the semi-finals on May 26. The winner will meet Jamaica or India in the final.

I get the optimism, but predicting shine against Portugal seems premature given their current squad strength.

Focusing on defensive organization and set-piece routines before June friendlies could be the key to tougher matches later.
