Lawyer Warns of Threat to Hammed Akanbi’s Life in Police Custody
The defence team for Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi has raised alarms over his safety in police custody. They say Akanbi, who was in poor health and placed on oxygen during court proceedings, was left alone for hours in an ambulance on Oba Akinjobi Way, Ikeja, without armed police protection. Defence counsel Adedotun Ajulo noted that Akanbi was previously guarded by over 20 armed officers while receiving treatment. The sudden withdrawal of security has intensified fears expressed by the defendant’s family that his life may be at risk. The Lagos State High Court directed the Police Commissioner to retain Akanbi in police custody after he was refused admission at Ikoyi Correctional Centre. His lawyers are now calling on the state government and the Nigeria Police Force to protect his constitutional right to life. The Lagos State Police Command has not yet responded to these allegations.
