Why Large Independent Power Producers Should Be Allowed to Sell Through the Grid

Independent power producers and large manufacturers that generate their own electricity should be allowed to supply excess power to the national grid under clear, special agreements. These producers should be properly metered and given priority for energy supplied from their plants. Distribution companies could retain a small agreed share for distribution and administration, while the generators receive most of the revenue from electricity sold within their areas. Companies such as Dangote and Coleman Cables, as well as universities with generation capacity, could earn more from their power investments through this model. It could also encourage them to expand generation and improve electricity supply.
