NUJ Port Harcourt Faces Enforcement of ₦5m Industrial Court Judgment

A National Industrial Court judgment involving the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Port Harcourt Correspondents’ Chapel, is moving toward enforcement as the period for an appeal nears its end. The court, in a suit arising from the 2018 chapel election, set aside suspensions imposed on affected members and awarded ₦5 million in damages and costs. It held that qualification for NUJ membership is different from qualification to contest elective office within the union. The ruling was based on the 2018 NUJ Constitution, which was in force when the dispute began. The court found that disciplinary action taken outside the union’s constitutional provisions could not stand. Unless the Court of Appeal grants a stay or alters the ruling, the ₦5 million remains enforceable. A notice of appeal alone does not stop enforcement of a National Industrial Court judgment.
