World Press Freedom Day: NUJ Southwest Demands Safety for Journalists and AI Accountability
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Southwest Zone joined the global community to mark World Press Freedom Day under the theme “Shaping a Future of Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security.” A UNESCO-led conference kicks off in Lusaka this May. NUJ Southwest Vice President Ronke Afebioye-Samo warned that harassment and attacks on journalists covering elections, protests and communal crises undermine accountability. She urged security agencies and state governments to investigate and prosecute perpetrators to end impunity. The union also highlighted the threat of AI-driven disinformation and deepfakes. It called for media houses to train staff in detecting false content and for tech platforms to be transparent in moderation. Full implementation of the Freedom of Information Act and improved welfare—fair pay, insurance and secure working conditions—were also stressed. NUJ Southwest pledged to train members on conflict-sensitive reporting, engage lawmakers for stronger protections and partner with civil society to widen public access to information. A free, safe and sustainable press is vital to peace and democracy.
