Rabid Dog Attack in Malam Matari: Five Hospitalised, Rapid Response Team Contains Outbreak
Five residents in Malam Matari, on the outskirts of Damaturu in Yobe State, are receiving post-exposure treatment after a rabid dog attacked people and livestock. Authorities moved quickly to stop further spread of the virus. The Yobe State Pilot Livestock Development Programme’s Rapid Response Team, led by Dr. Bulama Maina Yaro, safely disposed of two goats bitten by the infected animal. All five victims are undergoing the recommended five-dose PEP vaccine course and are responding well to treatment. The emergency operation involved collaboration with the Yobe State Ministry of Livestock and the Damaturu LGA Primary Health Department. Veterinary Officer Dr. Yau Buba Wakil also led a community sensitisation session on recognising rabies symptoms, first-aid steps after bites, and preventive measures for humans and animals. Dr. Yaro praised the state government for supplying vaccines and medical support. He urged residents to report suspected rabies cases promptly to the Damaturu veterinary rapid response team for immediate action.
