Father Receives One-Year Sentence for Incest After Daughter’s Suicide
A Ventura County father admitted to a sexual relationship with his biological daughter. He pleaded guilty in May 2026 to one felony count of incest and one misdemeanor count of providing alcohol to a minor. This week, the judge sentenced him to one year in jail and three years of probation. Prosecutors had sought the maximum three-year term under California law but said the plea agreement limited the sentence. The victim, 18-year-old Makayla Settles, died by suicide in December 2025 after the abuse. Family members and the deputy district attorney described the case as a grave betrayal of parental trust and called the sentence too light.
