Oloyede Clarifies JAMB’s Role: Admission Agency, Not Examination Body

Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, Registrar of JAMB, says the board is an educational assessment and admission agency rather than a traditional examination body. He made this remark at the maiden Rite Foods National Academic Excellence Awards in Lagos, where seven undergraduates shared ₦35 million in prizes. Oloyede stressed that while JAMB conducts exams as an operational tool, it is not like WAEC or NECO. Its core mandate is to facilitate entry into tertiary institutions.

Do you think separating admission from examination functions will improve JAMB's efficiency and fairness for students?

I'm all for it! Streamlining roles could speed things up and give every candidate a fairer chance.

It seems JAMB has always managed both testing and placement, so claiming they're not an exam body now feels more like rebranding than change.

Institutions should update their admissions guidelines to reflect JAMB's role clearly and guide students on where to seek exam information.
