From Beauty Queen to Senator: Franca Afegbua’s Trailblazing Journey
Franca Afegbua made history in 1983 when she became the first democratically elected Black female senator in Nigeria—and in the world. A trained beautician, she surprised many by turning her salon network into a powerful platform for women’s voices. Born in Okpella and raised across Northern Nigeria, Franca saw firsthand the gap in infrastructure between urban centers and her native community. After studying political science abroad and building a successful beauty business with branches from Kano to Lagos, she forged strong bonds with women by listening to their stories in her salons. Her deep connection with women gave her the grassroots support she needed to win in Bendel State under the NPN banner. Though a military coup cut short her term, Franca Afegbua’s victory remains a landmark moment for women in politics. Reflecting years later, she warned that public office is far from glamorous. Her advice: enter politics to serve the masses, not to wage a do-or-die battle.
