‘No Two Captains on One Ship’: Burkina Faso’s Traore Threatens Rivals

Ibrahim Traore, Burkina Faso’s military leader, has moved to quash rumours of an internal power struggle and vowed to remain the country’s sole captain. Addressing community leaders in Ouahigouya, he warned anyone who falters: “I’ll take you down without a second thought.” Speculation centres on the prolonged absence of two key figures in the junta: Oumarou Yabre, head of the National Intelligence Agency and widely seen as Traore’s second-in-command, and Farouk Azaria Sorgho, commander of Rapid Intervention Battalion No 4 and the regime’s spokesman. Both have not appeared publicly for weeks amid reports of cut security details and alleged abductions of their close associates. Security sources say several of Yabre’s allies have been detained, including an Islamic preacher who criticised a new religious freedom bill. Meanwhile, Sorgho’s father and other officials linked to him were removed by presidential decree on June 17. Local residents also report increased checkpoints around the presidential palace and reopened roads to reroute traffic away from sensitive areas. These developments underscore Traore’s efforts to consolidate control within the military government that seized power in September 2022.
