Tinubu’s CSU Admission Records: What Is Known and Why Questions Persist
President Bola Tinubu’s academic records remain a major political issue following the 2023 court-ordered release of documents by Chicago State University (CSU). CSU confirmed that Tinubu attended the university between 1977 and 1979 and received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in June 1979. Documents released during the US court case showed information submitted in his undergraduate application, including a listed secondary school certificate. Critics have questioned the school name and graduation date on that record. For his 2023 INEC nomination, Tinubu submitted a replacement diploma issued in 1997 after saying the original was lost. CSU said the replacement matched the format it used that year. The university also said it could verify his attendance and graduation, while describing differences in the replacement document as clerical errors. No court has found CSU complicit in forgery. However, opponents and civil society groups continue to demand further clarification from INEC ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
