From Amaigbo to Madison Square Garden: The Legacy of Dick Tiger
Richard Ihetu was born on August 14, 1929 in Amaigbo, Imo State. He showed early promise in soccer and track, but found his true calling in boxing. Under the guidance of British Army officers, he debuted professionally in 1952 as Dick Tiger. He went on to capture world titles in both the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. His famous quip about Gene Fullmer summed it up: “A tiger is stronger than a bull.” He sold out Madison Square Garden and used his earnings to support his wife, eight children and the Biafran cause. Though his final bout ended in a loss to Emile Griffith, his skill, wit and charm secured his place as one of Nigeria’s greatest sporting icons.
