Why INEC Must Require Annual Dues for Party Membership
Political parties should only count individuals who commit financially. No organization—be it a professional body or a church—accepts members who do not pay dues. INEC can adopt this standard to ensure genuine participation in party affairs. Churches and professional associations rely on regular contributions to operate. Political parties need the same accountability and resources. Requiring annual dues will strengthen party structures and discourage empty membership claims. Groups or associations with a substantial base of dues-paying members should also qualify to sponsor candidates. If Nigerians truly back their parties and causes, they must put their money where their mouth is.
