Saudi Football President Quits After Disappointing World Cup 2026 Exit

Yasser al-Misehal announced his resignation as president of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation after the national team was eliminated in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup. Saudi Arabia finished bottom of Group H with a 1-1 draw against Uruguay, a goalless draw with Cape Verde and a 4-0 defeat to Spain, earning just two points and missing the round of 32. In a statement on X, al-Misehal apologised to fans, took full responsibility for the outcome and said stepping down would allow a fresh start. During his seven-year tenure, he also led Saudi Arabia’s successful bid to host the 2034 World Cup.
