Two Men Convicted for Impersonating EFCC Officers in Abuja

Two Men Convicted for Impersonating EFCC Officers in Abuja

Two men, Haruna Mamuda and Sadiq Umar (aka Abubakar Hashimu Umar), have pleaded guilty to impersonating officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. They were arraigned on multiple counts including criminal conspiracy and unlawful representation at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Jikwoyi. Justice M. Zubairu heard that the duo, along with another suspect now on trial, conspired in March 2026 to defraud unsuspecting members of the public by posing as EFCC agents. Both defendants admitted guilt when the charges were read to them, prompting the prosecution to ask for their conviction. Defence counsel for both men pleaded for leniency, citing remorse and lack of prior convictions. The prosecution urged that their sentences serve as a deterrent, highlighting ongoing terrorism financing and kidnapping charges against them at the DSS. The court adjourned until July 22, 2026, for sentencing and ordered the men to remain in EFCC custody.

When you say strengthen checks, you mean biometric ID or more field verification?

It's worrying how easily someone could pose as EFCC officials, given the limited resources for verifying identities on the ground.

I agree it's troubling, but this conviction hints EFCC can still catch impostors when they slip up

Sure, they pleaded guilty, but this kind of case probably hides a broader pattern of fake officer scams across the city.

Agencies should introduce a simple verification code or SMS alert system to confirm genuine EFCC officers before any roadside operation.
