Prof. Amadi: Southeast Poised to Become Nigeria’s Top Electricity Market

Prof. Amadi: Southeast Poised to Become Nigeria’s Top Electricity Market — 1 of 4
1 / 4

A high-level conversation on electricity regulation, billing transparency and industrial productivity took place in Awka. The event was organised by the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria Southeast in partnership with state governments and regulatory commissions. Dr. Ada Chukwudozie, MAN Southeast Chair, highlighted the heavy toll of rising energy costs and unreliable supply on manufacturers. She called for transparency, accountability and continuous dialogue to drive sustainable reforms. Prof. Sam Amadi, former NERC Chairman and keynote speaker, explained how the 2025 Electricity Act’s decentralisation empowers states to set tariffs, attract investors and develop mini-grids. He urged targeted subsidies for industry and harmonised policies across the Southeast to boost competitiveness. Leaders from ASERC, EERC, FirstPower and industry groups pledged closer collaboration. They discussed consumer protection, metering, dispute resolution and private sector participation to strengthen supply and attract investment.

It's interesting that the event highlighted regulation and billing, but concrete plans for enforcement and consumer protection weren't detailed at all.

I'm not convinced a high-level conversation alone will fix billing transparency or grid reliability without grassroots oversight measures.

State governments should publish clear timelines and progress reports on regulatory reforms to keep manufacturers and consumers informed.
