Atiku Demands Probe of ₦8.8 Trillion Off-Budget Spending by Tinubu Administration
My attention has been drawn to a report by the International Monetary Fund showing that the Tinubu administration failed to record around ₦8.8 trillion in public expenditures. This amount equals roughly 2% of Nigeria’s GDP and was spent entirely outside the official budget. According to the IMF’s latest Article IV consultation, these off-budget funds funded large-scale projects beyond the reach of the Auditor-General and the National Assembly. This echoes the Alpha Beta revenue arrangement once used in Lagos State, now replicated on a national scale. The report also reveals that ₦800 billion was unlawfully deducted from state allocations without legislative authorization. These undisclosed funds point to a shadow treasury potentially aimed at financing political interests ahead of the 2027 elections. I call on the National Assembly to convene emergency hearings and direct the Auditor-General to conduct an independent audit of all off-budget spending. I urge anti-corruption agencies to launch formal investigations and the federal government to restore every naira diverted from states.
