Iran Allegedly Used Russian Verba Missiles to Down US F-15, Intelligence Says
1 / 4
An intelligence report indicates Iran purchased 500 Verba MANPADS and 2,500 9M336 missiles from Russia in a secret £450 million deal. Analysts believe one of these shoulder-fired systems struck a US F-15 Eagle over southern Iran using a three-channel infrared seeker to defeat aircraft countermeasures. The jet, normally based at RAF Lakenheath in the UK, was hit during a sortie over Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province. Both crew members ejected into rugged terrain. Elite units quickly rescued the pilot and later recovered the second airman in a remote mountain operation.
