How CAF’s Head-to-Head Rule Eliminated Zambia From WAFCON Despite a +6 Goal Difference

Zambia were eliminated from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations despite finishing level on six points with Nigeria and Malawi and recording the best overall goal difference among the three sides. CAF’s rules required a head-to-head mini-league involving only the matches between the tied teams. Results against Egypt, including Zambia’s 6-0 win, were excluded from the first tiebreaking stages. Malawi beat Nigeria 3-2, Nigeria defeated Zambia 1-0, and Zambia overcame Malawi 2-1. All three teams finished with three head-to-head points and a goal difference of zero. The deciding factor was goals scored in those head-to-head games: Malawi scored four, Nigeria scored three and Zambia scored two. Malawi finished first in the mini-league, Nigeria placed second and Zambia exited the tournament.
