Court Orders Forfeiture of Pastor’s Properties in Nasarawa Fraud Case

Court Orders Forfeiture of Pastor’s Properties in Nasarawa Fraud Case

The Federal High Court in Lafia, Nasarawa State, has permanently forfeited multiple landed properties to the federal government. Judge M.O. Olajuwon ruled that EFCC proved the assets seized from Theophilus Ebonyi of Faith On The Rock Ministry International are proceeds of crime. The seized properties include a 23-room hotel and event centre, a warehouse and sachet water factory, two office buildings, a primary school and over ₦1 million found in Ebonyi’s bank account. EFCC investigations showed funds were laundered through Theobarth Global Foundation and drawn from a fraudulent Ponzi scheme. In 2023, Ebonyi allegedly duped individuals and NGOs of over ₦1.3 billion by advertising a non-existent $20 billion grant from the Ford Foundation. The judge said Ebonyi failed to show cause against final forfeiture after EFCC satisfied all legal requirements for prosecution under the Advanced Fee Fraud Act.

You're right, losing those assets could limit the church's outreach programmes and reduce support for vulnerable residents.

It's striking that the EFCC convinced the court of these assets' illicit origins despite faith ministry claims.

Is forfeiture always the best approach though? Restoring funds matters, but community rehabilitation deserves equal attention.

Local leaders should track proceeds from these seized properties and ensure they support victim compensation or social programs.
