Mike Ozekhome’s SAN Suspension: Forged Passport and Alleged Corruption
Many Nigerians have focused on tribal angles to distract from the corruption implied in Mike Ozekhome’s suspension from the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria. He is accused of forging a passport for a fictitious person, Tali Shani, to conceal the sale of a property originally owned by Gen. Jeremiah Useni. The allegation states that stolen public funds were used to fund the purchase. When Gen. Useni died, attempts were made in the UK to transfer the property to Useni’s son. UK courts found that Ozekhome procured a forged travel document to prove Shani’s existence. This conduct raises serious questions about his fitness as a legal practitioner. The Nigerian Bar Association and its disciplinary body have yet to act. Nigerians should be concerned when public resources are misused and professionals aid in covering up corruption.
