US Launches Major Retaliatory Strikes on Iranian Targets as Middle East Conflict Spreads — 1 of 2
1 / 2

The United States says it has completed a major wave of retaliatory strikes on Iranian military targets after Iran reportedly launched missiles towards US bases in Jordan. US Central Command said the operation hit dozens of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps facilities, including command centres, missile and drone sites, coastal surveillance positions and maritime assets. Iranian state media reported strikes in Khuzestan province and on Qeshm Island. The conflict is widening across the region. Saudi Arabia and the US also struck Iran-aligned militia targets in Iraq following drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities. Iraq's Hashed al-Shaabi said at least 20 of its members were killed. Israel has separately accused Hezbollah of violating the Lebanon ceasefire by deploying a drone against an Israeli vehicle. The latest escalation has further weakened hopes of a quick return to negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

Calling it retaliation may explain the US position, but it does not make further escalation inevitable or harmless.

Beyond the immediate strikes, attention should stay on whether diplomacy can prevent more attacks on bases and civilians.
