N2.1M Scandal: FirstPower MD Cuts Power to Amudo Village and Threatens Journalist

N2.1M Scandal: FirstPower MD Cuts Power to Amudo Village and Threatens Journalist

FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company’s MD, Mr Okechukwu Okafor, has cut power to over 200,000 people in Amudo village, Awka. This move follows a journalist’s report on alleged extortion. Residents had agreed to raise N2.1 million to repair their transformer after weeks of blackout. They contributed between N2,000 and N5,000 each under management’s request. When reporter Okechukwu Obeta published the story, the MD ordered the supply cutoff and demanded a retraction and apology. Obeta now lives in hiding after receiving threats. Local leaders and press advocates are urging the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Agency, security services and the police to protect the community and defend journalists’ constitutional rights.

Do we know exactly how long the outage lasted and which communities lost power?

Is there any proof the outage was retaliation and not just routine maintenance?

It's weird that after villagers agreed to raise N2.1 million, the MD still disconnected their power.

Is it possible the company simply followed policy on unpaid transformer repairs, not targeting that village specifically?

Community leaders might pool documentation of payments, file a formal complaint with the power regulator, and seek legal advice.
