South African Court Halts Ramaphosa Impeachment Over Phala Phala Scandal

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has won a temporary reprieve after the Western Cape High Court ordered Parliament to pause impeachment proceedings over the Phala Phala cash scandal. The court stopped the Section 89 committee from continuing its public hearings while Ramaphosa’s legal challenge to an independent panel’s findings is heard. The review is expected in September. The case centres on the 2020 theft of about $580,000 hidden inside a sofa at Ramaphosa’s farm. He says the money came from the legitimate sale of buffaloes and denies wrongdoing. Political analysts say the ruling delays, but does not end, the impeachment process.
