UN Women: Only 3.4% of Nigerian Men Attend Antenatal Visits With Wives
The United Nations Women in Nigeria highlights that just 3.4% of Nigerian men attend antenatal and postnatal clinic visits with their spouses. Recent research shows overall male involvement in maternal healthcare is only 13.8%, with just 3.3% joining more than two antenatal sessions and a Male Involvement Index of 19.8%. These figures raise serious concerns about the wellbeing of mothers and newborns. Harmful cultural beliefs, rigid gender norms, stigma and misinformation are major barriers. Many women delay care or deliver outside health facilities, contributing to avoidable maternal and infant illnesses and deaths. UN Women held social norms training in Benue State for traditional, religious and community leaders. By championing positive male participation, these leaders can promote healthier families and reduce preventable risks for mothers and children.
