The Chagourys vs. Wale Edun: Inside the Finance Minister’s Ouster
President Tinubu omitted Finance Minister Wale Edun from his birthday wishes and fired him the next day. Insiders say Tinubu had wanted Edun to step down since last October but allowed him to hang on. Edun’s core duties—revenue generation, distribution, and domestic debt management—were handed to junior ministers. Delays in funding the Lagos–Calabar coastal road and Sokoto–Badagry highway, both handled by the Chagoury family, reportedly strained his relations with key presidential allies. Edun also fell out of favour after publicly disputing the government’s revenue figures and clashing with colleagues in cabinet meetings. Pressure from the president’s confidants, especially those close to the Chagourys, sealed his fate. His removal ends a career that began with Tinubu appointing him Lagos finance commissioner in 1999.
