Yobe Police Bust Syndicate Using Fake Bank Alerts, Seize Counterfeit Foreign Currencies
The Yobe State Police Command announced the arrest of five suspects in Damaturu for allegedly defrauding a fertiliser seller with fake bank transfer alerts. The suspects claimed to have paid ₦488,000 for ten bags of fertiliser before taking possession of the goods. Police officers raided the suspects’ hotel room on an intelligence tip. They recovered ten suspected counterfeit US $100 notes, fifty-six pieces of 50,000 Somali Shilling notes, ritual items, perfume bottles, a calabash and cloth. Investigation is ongoing to trace the source of the fake currencies and uncover other members of the syndicate. The police urged residents to verify electronic payments before releasing goods and remain vigilant against fraudsters.
