Miami Cops Sue Matt Damon and Ben Affleck Over Netflix Thriller ‘The Rip’

Miami Cops Sue Matt Damon and Ben Affleck Over Netflix Thriller ‘The Rip’ — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Miami-Dade police officers have filed a lawsuit against Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, claiming their Netflix film, The Rip, defamed them. The crime thriller, released in January, depicts a 2016 narcotics raid that became the largest cash seizure in Miami-Dade history at over $24 million. Officers involved in the real raid, represented by attorney Ignacio Alvarez, argue that the movie portrays them as corrupt and damages their reputations. Deputy Jonathan Santana says people now tease him about stealing money, despite no evidence of wrongdoing. This legal action follows criticism from Hialeah’s mayor, who argued the film unfairly brands the city as unsafe. The officers hope the lawsuit will clear their names and seek compensation for the harm they say the film has caused.

This lawsuit seems to hinge on whether the film really defamed actual officers. What do you all make of these claims?

It's interesting that the raid depicted involved over twenty four million dollars in seized cash, making it Miami-Dade's largest narcotics haul ever.

If you're watching The Rip, consider comparing its depiction to official police statements to judge how much creative license was taken.
